A Fully Distributed Architecture for Large Scale Workflow Enactment

چکیده
Standard client-server workflow management systems are usually designed as clientserver systems. The central server is responsible for the coordination of the workflow execution and, in some cases, may manage the activities database. This centralized control architecture may represent a single point of failure, which compromises the availability of the system. We propose a fully distributed and configurable architecture for workflow management systems. It is based on the idea that the activities of a case (an instance of the process) migrate from host to host, executing the workflow tasks, following a process plan. This core architecture is improved with the addition of other distributed components so that other requirements for Workflow Management Systems, besides scalability, are also addressed. The components of the architecture were tested in different distributed and centralized configurations. The ability to configure the location of components and the use of dynamic allocation of tasks were effective for the implementation of load balancing policies.

DEE: A Distributed Fault Tolerant Workflow Enactment Engine for Grid Computing
It is a large and complex task to design and implement a workflow management system that supports scalable executions of largescale scientific workflows in distributed and unstable Grid environments. In this paper we describe the Distributed workflow Enactment Engine (DEE) of the ASKALON application development environment for Grid computing. DEE proposes a de-centralized architecture that simp...

Standard client-server workflow management systems have an intrinsic scalability limitation, their centralized architecture that hinders the scalability of the system. The whole system is usually executed in a central server that usually represents a single point of failure, which compromises the availability of the system. We propose a fully distributed architecture for workflow management sys...

Standard client-server workflow management systems have an intrinsic scalability limitation: the central server is a bottleneck for large scale applications. It is also a single fault point that may disable the whole system. We propose a fully distributed architecture for workflow management systems. متن کاملDesign and Implementation of a Distributed Workflow Enactment Service
Workflows are activities involving the coordinated execution of multiple tasks performed by different processing entities, mostly in distributed heterogeneous environments which are very common in enterprises of even moderate complexity. In current commercial workflow systems, the workflow scheduler is a single centralized component. A distributed workflow enactment service on the other hand sh...
متن کاملWorkflow Enactment Based on a Chemical Metaphor Zsolt Németh and Christian Pérez and Thierry Priol
Executing workflows on large-scale heterogeneous distributed computing systems is a challenging task. Albeit there have been many well elaborated approaches, they are often motivated by a certain class of applications and focus on some implementation specific problems. The work presented in this paper aimed at establishing a highly abstract coordination model for distributed workflow enactment ...
